Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: i’ve worked in video production for about 15 years and eight years of that has been running a video production company so i wanted to make this video to talk specifically about how to price video production services because early on i made ton of mistakes when it came to pricing and i think because of some of those mistakes i left hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars on the table so hopefully you could watch this video learn a few things that i did incorrectly and correctly and take away some tips for pricing your own video production services and i have an example here that i’m going to pull up and i’ll kind of fill it as we go so you kind of get an understanding on how most video production companies price their product now i should say at the end of the video or towards the end i’m going to show you a much better way a couple of different ways to price your video production what i’m about to show you is what most people do to price their video production services and i don’t think it’s the best model but it’s the easiest model so if you’re getting started this is very repeatable and most people do it this way but it doesn’t leave much on the table the profit margins are tight and i think because of the way the pricing structure is just works in this industry it really hasn’t the value for this kind of service has only declined over time because i think it’s kind of a race to the bottom with this type of pricing but i wanted to show it to you because the other two are a little bit difficult to do if you’re just starting out this is much easier because it’s very straightforward but i’ll explain all of that in this video and i’m putting together an entire course on starting and growing a video production company step by step i wanted to make it very easy to understand and it’s going to be full of bonuses and information so add your name to the email list below if you want to be notified when that’s released okay let me start here a client let’s say calls you up and they want a marketing video where they show off their services let’s say they’re a small financial firm okay and this marketing video i know from having done marketing videos requires a better pre-production so i’m gonna write out my pre-production and from what i’ve done before with these i could do this within two hours of pre-production okay so pre-production is two hours and this requires a producer to handle it then you have production so your actual day of shooting this is one day of shooting and this requires a dp it requires sound and maybe it requires a grip to help with lights maybe we’ll do this with three people and we’ll do director dp dp director one person this could be me i have the skills to do both now if you’re just a producer that’s three people that you have to send out if you don’t know how to shoot or direct the shoot and then you have your editing or your post production and based on these type of three to five minute videos let’s say that’s 10 hours including revisions and that needs an editor to take care of that so now that i know kind of a good idea of what this is going to take let’s go back to this estimate page in quickbooks so pre-production two hours now what should the rate be for pre-production typically in chicago producers will make about 800 a day for a 10-hour day so that’s about 80 an hour so i’m just gonna put exactly what a producer is going to make here 80 bucks an hour times two 160. now the profit margin and what i’m going to add to this is not included just yet i’ll explain that in a second then you have production right and i broke it down if i go back to the previous page in three different things right so let’s go ahead and add our director of photography that is this one and from based on hiring freelance directors of photography that could be about 800 and these don’t work hourly this is based on a day rate pre-production is built hourly post-production is built hourly but production is typically based on a half day or full day rate and nowadays we only typically do full day rates then you have sound right so we had the audio tech now usually audio techs work with gear as well so that’s 650 for their time let’s say 250 for their gear so we’re at 900 for that and then let’s go ahead and add a grip now right now 550 is a good rate for a grip and then we have post production right we have editing uh editor that gets 75 an hour that was about 12 hours i believe i had 10 hours so i’ll put in 10 hours here okay so that came out to about 31.60 and this is a very basic marketing video right this is a marketing video where um there is almost no pre-production because we’re assuming the client knows exactly what they want we are only doing the production and post-production really the pre-production is more logistics it’s not creative at all we’re not going to help them with question nothing like that just to simplify the case right so we’re at 3160 and the thing i did not include actually is any gear right the sound tech right we are hiring a freelancer with their kit and that’s how much they are now this is just the average number but audio text could range from anywhere from 800 with gear all the way to 1500 depending on what you’re doing with this type of shoot and again these are the freelance rates in chicago so it could be completely different where you’re watching this and that’s why i always recommend people when they create a video production company that they have a good understanding of the freelance market so they understand if they need to source a freelancer and they don’t have someone in-house what these prices are and then we have equipment right so we have camera equipment let’s go ahead and add that and let’s say camera equipment is about three hundred dollars and then we have lighting equipment so let’s go ahead and add lighting equipment and let’s say that’s also another three hundred dollars worth of lights and that’s grip equipment and things like that the audio is taken care of now as far as equipment right we have a lot of equipment in-house right so these prices come from just having a structured document that has all those prices if you’re using a rental house to rent equipment which i recommend for a lot of people that don’t have much equipment to begin with again you could use their pricing usually they have it on their website so that helps you with creating a pricing structure like this then there is the profit margin right so far if you do exactly this you’re basically just creating a job for yourself without a profit if you went on the job as one of those roles if you didn’t go on the job as one of those roles which if you’re trying to grow real business you shouldn’t be going on every single job then your profit margin really is where all the money comes from let me show you what most video production companies do but remember i’m going to show you a much better way in a second so let i’m just going to put production here as a line item but i’m going to put zero and right now if i took 3760 and took 20 percent of that so it would be 20 of 376 you’re looking at seven hundred fifty two dollars worth of profit on this job now why a lot of video productions cost five thousand dollars right is because right now i have a profit margin but i also don’t have any overhead so if you’re paying rent i pay a lot in workers comp insurance i pay a lot in general liability insurance i don’t think i even added music here in post production so you need a little bit of a margin there for things that are just going to come up what about your crew having to park downtown that could be fifty dollars per person that’s another hundred fifty dollars being account for so that’s why i would at least bulk that up to about five thousand dollar round number for this specific project but here is why over time i try to stay away from this kind of a pricing structure but 95 of video production companies do this here is the main problem with this everybody could compete in this world with your pricing based on price and when people compete based on price it lowers price and usually the person that bids it just right usually by accident gets the project so maybe you try to say oh most people are charging five thousand dollars for this kind of project i’ll charge four thousand and i’ll shave up this and i’ll pay the sound guy less and i’ll pay the grip less maybe i’ll hire editor in-house and i pay them less and it brings the whole market down and that’s what i’ve seen in about 10 years the reason why a lot of people price like this is because they came up as a freelancer and as a freelancer you think the same way well what’s my dp rate 800 a thousand okay what should i get for my camera this rental house is charging 300. they basically just took that model and they priced video productions the same way how can you stand apart and this is the part where i’m going to explain the couple other ways that i think are much better way when it comes to pricing instead of just line iteming things adding a better profit margin if things go wrong you basically make no money if i was to make videos like this i would have to make one every single day 365 days a year with a 700 profit margin and i still wouldn’t make as much money as my video production company makes in profit right because it just doesn’t work and i have no overhead built in and this is a 5 000 project which to most people is a decent sized project but if you really break it down it’s not right you may have to do this with two people and not three and try to cut down but again this decreases the price i’ve seen people do this type of project somehow for fifteen hundred dollars but those companies i saw for the last ten years disappeared in just a few years it’s just not the right way to approach pricing so what should you do instead if you are brand new this is completely fine because it gets you started and having a 800 profit margin on a project is just fine if you’re starting out and you’re making a good day rate if you could fulfill one of those roles maybe you do the editing maybe do the pre-production maybe you’re there as a sound person right you you basically fill in as one of those roles now this is going to hold back on how fast you could grow your business but let me explain this other value-based pricing and there’s a couple of ways you could approach this one way that i’ve seen people do very successfully i don’t personally do this one myself but you could become the premium price model in your town or in your region where you’re creating these videos by that i mean you are the highest price based on doing market research in your area a lot of times just by being the highest price the client may perceive you as the highest value now this is true with almost anything you could think of the highest price just comes with a this perceived value of being the best even if it’s not the best now again this is why i didn’t mention this in the beginning because placing yourself as the highest price the premium option you have to always deliver a very premium result and service as well right so because you want to repeat clients so it’s a little bit tricky but if you could work up to it it’s something that could completely change your business now the other option and what could also help you become the premium leader in price is by niching down right now based on how this was pitched to me hey we want a marketing video every video production company not just where i live but pretty much in the whole country or even in other countries could probably deliver an equal result and they could compete on things that don’t matter to this person or to this company right it could be like oh we’ll shoot this with two cameras we’ll add a drone we’ll do this in 4k 8k 10k it doesn’t matter that doesn’t change the result from that marketing video all that much i’ve done this many many times running ads with a marketing video that had better production qualities in things we could only perceive as people in video production a lot of my clients have no idea what i’m talking about when i say hey i’m going to deliver this in 4k or 8k versus 1080p or this is going to have this other angle or i’m going to put this on a motorized slider those things are not what perceived values are typically for this type of project they are on higher end commercial work when you’re looking at spending tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands per project all those things do come into play right so sometimes with our high-end customers we may bring in a super techno crane on a job right and you could charge a lot of money for that and they perceive value in that at the highest caliber but with these five thousand ten thousand dollar project those are not what is going to win so my point is the way you can’t stand out with these is you could niche down and become the expert in whatever this is so let’s say this was a marketing video for some sort of a private practice doctor okay if it was a marketing video for that or i think i said a financial firm or some a small financial firm they care about results from that marketing video so if you are the expert in making marketing videos in that category in that niche private practice financial firms whatever the niche you are far more likely to be able to charge a far higher price than most people that are just going to compete on price and you do things with your proposal and the way you take care of these sales calls where you could show that value to that customer this is why i always first teach niching down and picking a niche in whatever type of video production work you want to do because if you’re the expert in that you could charge whatever you want honestly your price could be 10 times more expensive than this commodity pricing that everybody could compete against now if you really wanted to there’s another approach where you could basically pitch this right not just on price but you could pitch this as value because you’re going to deliver results now this will take your company to be a little bit bigger than a video production company because what i mean by this is let’s say a company hires you to make a marketing video for them really what they want is more sales and more customers they don’t really care about the marketing video as a product right so they actually have to run ads to get people to become customers clients whatever they want with that marketing video now this is another issue if they paid fifteen hundred dollars for that video they may just you know run an ad doesn’t work give up hire someone else to take care of something else if they spent 15 grand on that same video and if they’re a small company you better believe they’re not to let that go they’re going to figure out how to do marketing with that video to get clients so what i recommend is that’s based on the premium pricing that i mentioned but what i recommend is you could be that second step to this whole equation you could learn and this makes you a bigger agency than just a video production company but you could learn how to run ads for them and get them results and then keep them on retainer for those results now i’m going to make more videos about this because this is basically going out of the scope of this project or out of this video but once you do that you are far more valuable and you retain customers much longer but you do have to learn a whole different skill set of getting customers for other companies okay but i do teach dan as well on this channel so hopefully you took some value from this again some of these are going out of the scope of what i covered in the beginning so you can start completely using the model that almost every video production company uses which is just adding line items adding it all up adding a 20 25 margin for profit and then having something maybe for overhead if you’re getting an office or you have employees or hiring cheaper labor to compete on price and then once you get comfortable with that approaching some of these other techniques that i showed you where you become the premium price leader you niche down where you focus so specifically on something that the client sees you as the expert where nobody else is competing with you in that category or scaling and becoming an agency so you could not only do the video production and the things but you could also get clients results by doing their ads and marketing as well so this was on the longer side but hopefully there’s enough nuggets for you to take some actionable steps here 0.08 pre-production is more logistics it&;s
0.08 not creative at all we&;re not going to
0.08 help them with question nothing like

0.08 just to simplify the case right so we&;re

0.08 and the thing i did not include actually
0.08 is any gear right the sound tech right
0.08 we are hiring a freelancer with their
0.08 kit and that&;s how much they are now
0.08 this is just the average number but
0.08 audio text could range from anywhere
0.08 from 800 with gear all the way to 1500
0.08 depending on what you&;re doing with this
0.08 type of shoot and again these are the
0.08 freelance rates in chicago so it could
0.08 be completely different where you&;re
0.08 watching this and that&;s why i always
0.08 recommend people when they create a
0.08 video production company that they have
0.08 a good understanding of the freelance
0.08 market so they understand if they need
0.08 to source a freelancer and they don&;t
0.08 have someone in-house what these prices
0.08 are and then we have equipment right so
0.08 we have camera equipment let&;s go ahead
0.08 and add that
0.08 and let&;s say camera equipment is about
0.08 three hundred dollars and then we have
0.08 lighting equipment so let&;s go ahead and
0.08 add lighting equipment and let&;s say
0.08 that&;s also another three hundred
0.08 dollars worth of lights and that&;s grip
0.08 equipment and things like that the audio
0.08 is taken care of now as far as equipment
0.08 right we have a lot of equipment
0.08 in-house right so these prices come from
0.08 just having a structured
0.08 document that has all those prices if
0.08 you&;re using a rental house to rent
0.08 equipment which i recommend for a lot of
0.08 people that don&;t have much equipment to
0.08 begin with again you could use their
0.08 pricing usually they have it on their
0.08 website so that helps you with creating
0.08 a pricing structure like this then there
0.08 is the profit margin right so far if you
0.08 do exactly this you&;re basically just
0.08 creating a job for yourself without a
0.08 profit if you went on the job as one of
0.08 those roles if you didn&;t go on the job
0.08 as one of those roles which if you&;re
0.08 trying to grow real business you
0.08 shouldn&;t be going on every single job
0.08 then your profit margin really is where
0.08 all the money comes from let me show you
0.08 what most video production companies do
0.08 but remember i&;m going to show you a
0.08 much better way in a second so let i&;m
0.08 just going to put production here as a
0.08 line item but i&;m going to put zero
0.08 and right now if i took 3760 and took 20
0.08 percent of that so it would be 20
0.08 of
0.08 376 you&;re looking at seven hundred
0.08 fifty two dollars worth of profit on
0.08 this job now why a lot of video
0.08 productions cost five thousand dollars
0.08 right is because
0.08 right now i have a profit margin but i
0.08 also don&;t have any overhead so if
0.08 you&;re paying rent
0.08 i pay a lot in workers comp insurance i
0.08 pay a lot in general liability insurance
0.08 i don&;t think i even added music here in
0.08 post production so you need a little bit
0.08 of a margin there for things that are
0.08 just going to come up what about your
0.08 crew having to park downtown that could
0.08 be fifty dollars per person that&;s
0.08 another hundred fifty dollars being
0.08 account for so that&;s why i would at
0.08 least bulk that up to about five
0.08 thousand dollar round number for this
0.08 specific project but here is why over
0.08 time i try to stay away from this kind
0.08 of a pricing structure but 95 of video
0.08 production companies do this
0.08 here is the main problem with this
0.08 everybody could compete in this world
0.08 with your pricing based on price
0.08 and when people compete based on price
0.08 it lowers price and usually the person
0.08 that bids it just right usually by
0.08 accident gets the project so maybe you
0.08 try to say oh most people are charging
0.08 five thousand dollars for this kind of
0.08 project i&;ll charge four thousand and
0.08 i&;ll shave up this and i&;ll pay the
0.08 sound guy less and i&;ll pay the grip
0.08 less maybe i&;ll hire editor in-house and
0.08 i pay them less
0.08 and it brings the whole market down and
0.08 that&;s what i&;ve seen in about 10 years
0.08 the reason why a lot of people price
0.08 like this is because they came up as a
0.08 freelancer and as a freelancer you think
0.08 the same way well what&;s my dp rate 800
0.08 a thousand okay what should i get for my
0.08 camera this rental house is charging
0.08 300. they basically just took that model
0.08 and they priced video productions the
0.08 same way how can you stand apart and
0.08 this is the part where i&;m going to
0.08 explain the couple other ways that i
0.08 think are much better way when it comes
0.08 to pricing instead of just line iteming
0.08 things adding a better profit margin if
0.08 things go wrong you basically make no
0.08 money if i was to make videos like this
0.08 i would have to make one
0.08 every single day
0.08 365 days a year with a 700 profit margin
0.08 and i still wouldn&;t make as much money
0.08 as my video production company makes in
0.08 profit right because it just doesn&;t
0.08 work and i have no overhead built in and
0.08 this is a 5 000 project which to most
0.08 people is a decent sized project but if
0.08 you really break it down it&;s not right
0.08 you may have to do this with two people
0.08 and not three and try to cut down but
0.08 again this
0.08 decreases the price i&;ve seen people do
0.08 this type of project somehow for fifteen
0.08 hundred dollars but those companies i
0.08 saw for the last ten years disappeared
0.08 in just a few years it&;s just not the
0.08 right way to approach pricing so what
0.08 should you do instead if you are brand
0.08 new this is completely fine because it
0.08 gets you started and having a 800 profit
0.08 margin on a project is just fine if
0.08 you&;re starting out and you&;re making a
0.08 good day rate if you could fulfill one
0.08 of those roles maybe you do the editing
0.08 maybe do the pre-production
0.08 maybe you&;re there as a sound person
0.08 right you you basically fill in as one
0.08 of those roles now this is going to hold
0.08 back on how fast you could grow your
0.08 business but let me explain this other
0.08 value-based pricing and there&;s a couple
0.08 of ways you could approach this
0.08 one way that i&;ve seen people do very
0.08 successfully i don&;t personally do this
0.08 one myself
0.08 but you could become the premium price
0.08 model
0.08 in your town or in your region where
0.08 you&;re creating these videos by that i
0.08 mean
0.08 you are the highest price
0.08 based on doing market research in your
0.08 area
0.08 a lot of times just by being the highest
0.08 price the client may perceive you as the
0.08 highest value now this is true with
0.08 almost anything you could think of the
0.08 highest price just comes with a this
0.08 perceived value of being the best even
0.08 if it&;s not the best now
0.08 again this is why i didn&;t mention this
0.08 in the beginning because
0.08 placing yourself as the highest price
0.08 the premium option you have to always
0.08 deliver a very premium result and
0.08 service as well right so because you
0.08 want to repeat clients so it&;s a little
0.08 bit tricky
0.08 but if you could work up to it it&;s
0.08 something that could completely change
0.08 your business now the other option and
0.08 what could also help you become the
0.08 premium leader in price
0.08 is by niching down
0.08 right now based on how this was pitched
0.08 to me hey we want a marketing video
0.08 every video production company not just
0.08 where i live but pretty much in the
0.08 whole country or even in other countries
0.08 could probably deliver an equal result
0.08 and they could compete on things that
0.08 don&;t matter to this person or to this
0.08 company right it could be like oh we&;ll
0.08 shoot this with two cameras we&;ll add a
0.08 drone we&;ll do this in 4k 8k 10k
0.08 it doesn&;t matter that doesn&;t change
0.08 the result from that marketing video all
0.08 that much
0.08 i&;ve done this many many times running
0.08 ads with a marketing video that had
0.08 better production qualities in things we
0.08 could only perceive as people in video
0.08 production a lot of my clients have no
0.08 idea what i&;m talking about when i say
0.08 hey i&;m going to deliver this in 4k or
0.08 8k
0.08 versus 1080p or this is going to have
0.08 this other angle or i&;m going to put
0.08 this on a motorized slider those things
0.08 are not
0.08 what perceived values are typically for
0.08 this type of project they are on higher
0.08 end commercial work when you&;re looking
0.08 at
0.08 spending tens of thousands to hundreds
0.08 of thousands per project
0.08 all those things do come into play right
0.08 so sometimes with our high-end customers
0.08 we may bring in a super techno crane on
0.08 a job right and you could charge
0.08 a lot of money for that and they
0.08 perceive value in that at the highest
0.08 caliber but with these five thousand ten
0.08 thousand dollar project those are not
0.08 what is going to win
0.08 so my point is the way you can&;t stand
0.08 out with these is you could niche down
0.08 and become the expert in whatever this
0.08 is so let&;s say this was a marketing
0.08 video for
0.08 some sort of a private practice doctor
0.08 okay if it was a marketing video for
0.08 that or i think i said a financial firm
0.08 or some a small financial firm
0.08 they care about results from that
0.08 marketing video so if you are the expert
0.08 in making marketing videos
0.08 in that category in that niche private
0.08 practice financial firms whatever the
0.08 niche
0.08 you are far more likely to be able to
0.08 charge a far
0.08 higher price than most people that are
0.08 just going to compete on price
0.08 and you do things with your proposal and
0.08 the way you take care of these sales
0.08 calls where you could show that value to
0.08 that customer
0.08 this is why i always first teach niching
0.08 down and picking a niche in whatever
0.08 type of video production work you want
0.08 to do because if you&;re the expert in
0.08 that
0.08 you could charge whatever you want
0.08 honestly your price could be 10 times
0.08 more expensive than this commodity
0.08 pricing that everybody could compete
0.08 against now if you really wanted to
0.08 there&;s another approach where you could
0.08 basically pitch this
0.08 right not just on price
0.08 but you could pitch this as value
0.08 because you&;re going to deliver results
0.08 now this will take your company to be a
0.08 little bit bigger than a video
0.08 production company because what i mean
0.08 by this is let&;s say a company hires you
0.08 to make a marketing video for them
0.08 really what they want is more sales and
0.08 more customers they don&;t really care
0.08 about the marketing video as a product
0.08 right so they actually have to run ads
0.08 to get people to become customers
0.08 clients whatever they want with that
0.08 marketing video now
0.08 this is another issue if they paid
0.08 fifteen hundred dollars for that video
0.08 they may just you know run an ad doesn&;t
0.08 work give up hire someone else to take
0.08 care of something else
0.08 if they spent 15 grand on that same
0.08 video and if they&;re a small company you
0.08 better believe they&;re not to let that
0.08 go they&;re going to figure out how to do
0.08 marketing with that video
0.08 to get clients so what i recommend is
0.08 that&;s based on the premium pricing that
0.08 i mentioned but what i recommend is you
0.08 could be that second step to this whole
0.08 equation you could learn and this makes
0.08 you a bigger agency than just a video
0.08 production company but you could learn
0.08 how to run ads for them and get them
0.08 results and then keep them on retainer
0.08 for those results
0.08 now i&;m going to make more videos about
0.08 this because this is basically going out
0.08 of the scope of this project or out of
0.08 this video but once you do that you are
0.08 far more valuable and you retain
0.08 customers much longer but you do have to
0.08 learn a whole different skill set of
0.08 getting customers
0.08 for other
0.08 companies okay but i do teach dan as
0.08 well on this channel so hopefully you
0.08 took some value from this again some of
0.08 these are going out of the scope of what
0.08 i covered in the beginning so you can
0.08 start completely using the model that
0.08 almost every video production company
0.08 uses which is just adding line items
0.08 adding it all up adding a 20 25 margin
0.08 for profit and then having something
0.08 maybe for overhead if you&;re getting an
0.08 office or you have employees or hiring
0.08 cheaper labor to compete on price
0.08 and then once you get comfortable with
0.08 that approaching some of these other
0.08 techniques that i showed you where you
0.08 become the premium price leader you
0.08 niche down where you focus so
0.08 specifically on something that the
0.08 client sees you as the expert where
0.08 nobody else is competing with you in
0.08 that category or scaling and becoming an
0.08 agency so you could not only do the
0.08 video production and the things but you
0.08 could also get clients results by doing
0.08 their ads and marketing as well so this
0.08 was on the longer side but hopefully
0.08 there&;s enough nuggets for you to take
